Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are an option for replacing missing teeth. Unlike dental implants which are surgically anchored to the jawbone, bridges attach to existing teeth. Replacing missing teeth is important to prevent further dental problems.

Missing teeth can cause the other teeth to become misaligned. When teeth are missing, the person may have difficulty chewing or speaking. Missing teeth can also damage a person’s self-confidence and self-esteem.

Dental bridges are semi-permanent solutions to replacing a missing tooth. Dental bridges can need to be replaced after being used for a considerable amount of time. Most dental bridges will last at least ten years as long as they are properly cared for. Regular dental visits and proper oral hygiene help prevent more tooth decay. Activities that could damage the bridge or teeth such as chewing ice or opening containers with the teeth should be avoided.

There are different types of dental bridges that vary depending on how the dental bridge is attached to the teeth. A traditional dental bridge involves receiving a crown on both sides of the teeth next to the missing tooth. A false tooth is connected to the crowns that are added to the adjacent teeth.

A Cantilever bridge is similar to a traditional bridge except that the bridge is secured by only one crown on an adjacent tooth. This is necessary if there aren’t any existing teeth on the other side of the dental bridge.

A Maryland bridge, also called a Maryland bonded bridge or resin-bonded bridge, is secured to adjacent teeth with metal wings. This type of dental bridge is often made of plastic false teeth and gums. The metal wings are bonded to the existing teeth.

Receiving bridges typically takes at least two office visits. The teeth will be prepared for the crowns. Temporary dental bridges may be made for the person to wear while the permanent bridge is being made.

After the permanent dental bridge is made, the person will need to go to the dentist to have the temporary bridge replaced with the permanent one. Additional dental visits may be necessary to make adjustments to the fit of the dental bridge. When the bridge is fitted properly, the dental bridge is permanently cemented in place.
