Dental Insurance Plans

Dental insurance plans can cover part of the cost of dental procedures and preventative dental care. For each dental insurance plan, the person must pay a fee that is often structured as a monthly fee. The person may pay for an individual insurance plan to cover only their own dental needs or a family plan to cover the needs of their spouse and children.

A discount dental insurance plan offers discounts on preventative dental care and allows patients to receive some necessary dental procedures for a set, discounted price. For example, the discount dental plan may set the price of fillings at $63 and crowns at $516. Usually, the person must go to a dentist that accepts the discount dental plan to receive the discounted prices.

Because a discount dental insurance plan does is not a typically insurance plan, but offers discount prices for dental services, there is no deductible. Many discount plans have no limit on how often the person uses the discounted dental services.

Traditional dental insurance plans often cover a percentage of the costs. Most dental insurance policies have a deductible that the person is required to pay per year before the insurance coverage begins to cover part of the dental care expenses. Some insurance  have a co-pay that the person must pay for each office visit. A typical co-pay amount for dental insurance is $10.

Some dental insurance plans have a maximum amount that they will pay each year for dental care. A plan may have a limit of $500 or $1,000 per person. A few insurance plans will pay as much as $1,250 per person.

When deciding on a dental insurance plan, many factors need to be considered. A person needs to be able to pay the monthly fee for enrollment in the dental insurance. If the person wants to stay with their dentist, the person should ask the dentist which dental insurance plans are accepted by that dentist. The person also needs to make sure that the coverage and limits will fulfill their dental care needs. This is not always possible to accurately judge. However, if a person often has dental needs, the person may not want to opt for the cheapest dental insurance plans with the least coverage.
