A sinus toothache is a toothache caused by a sinus infection. Sinus infections are also called sinusitis. These sinus toothaches can be confused for a toothache caused by a cavity or abscess. Even dentists can mistake a sinus toothache for a toothache caused by tooth decay, especially if the effected tooth has some tooth decay.
The upper back molars are most often affected by sinus toothaches. Upper molars are affected because the roots of these upper molars may extend into the sinus cavity. If the person has a sinus infection, the person may experience pain or discomfort similar to toothache pain. This is due to the buildup of pressure in the sinus cavity. This pressure puts pressure on the roots of the upper, back molars causing sinus toothaches.
A person experiencing pain or discomfort of the upper back molars should consider the possibility of a sinus infection. Other symptoms of sinus infections include a runny nose, nasal congestion, discomfort or tenderness of the face, headaches, and a sore throat. Sinus infections can cause post-nasal drip which can cause gagging, especially for people who have the reflux condition called gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD).
If a person recognizes that the toothache pain is probably caused by a sinus infection, the person should seek treatment for the sinus infection. People often look for information about how to treat a sinus toothache. Treating sinus toothaches is only done by treating the sinus infection. Once the sinus infection has been successfully treated, the toothache pain should subside without further treatment if the sinus infection was the cause of the toothache.
If the person is experiencing symptoms of a sinus infection, the person may want to seek treatment for the sinus infection before seeing a dentist for the toothache. It is not a bad idea to have the tooth checked by a dentist. It is possible for the person to have both a sinus infection and a toothache caused by tooth decay. If the sinus condition is resolved and the toothache continues, the person definitely needs to see the dentist to determine the cause of the toothache and have it properly treated.
