Toothache Remedy

The best toothache remedy is to see a dentist to treat the cause of the toothache. While someone is waiting to be able to see the dentist, the person may want to use a toothache home remedy or home treatment to help ease the toothache pain.

A person who is experiencing toothache pain may first want to try over-the-counter pain relievers and over-the-counter toothache medication. The over-the-counter toothache remedies come in gel and liquid forms. They are applied to the tooth and may have a numbing effect that temporarily eases toothache pain.

Another toothache home treatment is to apply an ice pack to the outside of the cheek near the tooth that is hurting. People using ice packs should be careful not to apply the ice pack directly to the skin as this can cause skin damage.

Some people hold an ice cube in the mouth on or near the hurting tooth for a short period of time before spitting it out. This may offer some relief due to the numbing effect of the ice, but for some people with sensitive teeth, it may make the tooth pain worse.

For toothaches caused by trapped food, a toothache remedy may be as simple as vigorously rinsing the mouth with lukewarm water or mouthwash. Brushing and flossing the teeth may also help. For a toothache due to a cavity, some people find temporary relief by applying Sensodyne toothpaste to the tooth and allowing it to dry on the tooth. When using this toothache remedy, the person needs to avoid drinking or getting the tooth wet as much as possible for the few hours that it is working.

Some home remedies for toothaches include placing a garlic glove onto the hurting tooth and applying alcohol to the tooth. Though people may experience fast, temporary relief using alcohol like brandy, whiskey, or other alcoholic beverages, some people report experiencing gum irritation and blistering from the alcohol.

Clove oil is a popular remedy. The clove oil can be diluted with a small amount of olive oil. Some clove oil home remedies for toothache pain suggest adding a pinch of pepper powder. The clove oil can be applied to the tooth with a cotton swab as a form of toothache remedy.
